Dub Echoes (GB 2008, 70 min, OF, DVD Projektion)
Having been shown at festivals around the world, the film has already won all kinds of
plaudits. It traces the origins of dub and its subsequent influence on the evolution of
hip-hop and electronic music, including techno, downbeat and dubstep.
An impressive array of talking heads were assembled for the film, reflecting the depth
and reach of dub throughout western culture. While some of the contributions are
platitudinous in the extreme (Don Letts going on about the "studio as instrument" etc),
the majority are well-poised and enlightening. Probably the most charismatic and
revealing respondent is veteran producer Bunny Lee, though his accent is so thick FACT
had to fiddle with the sound-settings on its DVD player before we had even the faintest
clue what he was on about. Other living legends offered a penny for their thoughts
include King Jammy, Lee 'Scratch' Perry, Bullwackie, Sly & Robbie, U-Roy.
2ManyDJs, Bill Laswell, Kode9, DJ Spooky, Congo Natty, David Katz, LTJ Bukem, Switch,
Steve Barrow and Peter Kruder are among the more relevant and percipient commentators;
one can only imagine who thought it was a good idea to ask Audio Bullys for their opinion.
