At the end of 2024, the University of Leipzig cancelled a planned lecture by Benny Morris as part of the lecture series „Traditions and Present of Anti-Semitism“ after protests by pro-Palestinian activists. Under the motto „The University Disinvites - PEN Berlin Invites“, we are now offering a space for discussion that a university has refused to provide. Religious conflict? Colonial oppression? An apartheid state? Or the struggle for survival of a country surrounded by enemies? The Middle East conflict polarises like no other geopolitical issue. This event will explore the historical roots of the Middle East conflict and discuss its political and ethical dimensions. Benny Morris is one of Israel's most influential – and disputed – historians. His research on the expulsion of Palestinians during the founding phase of Israel has been internationally recognized, and although critics of Israel such as Chomsky frequently cite him, he is one of the most prominent defenders of Israel. In a time of increasing polarisation, there is a pressing need for spaces for nuanced debate and open exchange of views – beyond simplistic narratives and ideological blinders.

Unter dem Motto „Uni lädt aus – PEN Berlin lädt ein“ bieten wir nun Raum für die Diskussion, die eine Universität verweigert hat. Religiöser Konflikt? Koloniale Unterdrückung? Apartheidstaat? Oder Überlebenskampf eines von Feinden umzingelten Landes? Der Nahostkonflikt polarisiert wie kaum ein anderes geopolitisches Thema. Die Veranstaltung geht den historischen Wurzeln des Nahostkonflikts nach und diskutiert seine politischen und ethischen Dimensionen. Benny Morris gilt als einer der einflussreichsten – und streitbarsten – Historiker Israels. Seine Forschungen zur Vertreibung von Palästinensern in der Gründungsphase Israels haben internationale Anerkennung gefunden, und obwohl Israel-Kritiker wie Chomsky ihn häufig zitieren, zählt er zu den profiliertesten Verteidigern Israels.
