Einführung zu Abolish The Police! (online)

Täglich neue Meldungen von rechtsextremen Chatgruppen in der Polizei, verschwundener Munition, Polizeigewalt oder Tode im Polizeigewahrsam lassen ernsthafte Zweifel aufkommen, ob diese Institution überhaupt noch reformierbar ist. Dies gilt umso mehr, wenn die Polizei für viele Menschen keine Ansprechstelle ist, die “Sicherheit” gewährleistet, sondern diejenigen sind, die das Leben gewaltvoll kontrolliert.

Wir von Copwatch Leipzig wollen die Polizei, wie wir sie bisher kennen, abschaffen und durch andere Mechanismen zur Herstellung von “Sicherheit” und “Gerechtigkeit” ersetzen. Die aus us-amerikanischen Black Power Bewegungen hervorgegangene Forderung “Abolish The Police!” ist keine einfach Reform, die sich ohne notwendige gesellschaftliche Veränderungen vollziehen kann. Kapitalismus und Nationalstaat, als die von der Polizei zu schützende sog. „Sicherheit und Ordnung“ müssen daher ebenso überwunden werden, wie wir solidarische Mechanismen im Umgang mit Gewalt und Konflikten in unseren Communities entwickeln müssen. Der Abolishing-Ansatz ist also eingebettet in einen gesamtgesellschaftlichen Transformationsprozess, zu dem wir gemeinsam erste Schritte wagen wollen.
In unserer kleinen Veranstaltungsreihe “hier und jetzt: Solidarität statt Polizei” beschäftigen wir uns mit der Frage, wie wir direkt bei uns in Leipzig anfangen können, Alternativen zur Polizei zu entwickeln.

Wir selbst wollen zunächst die aktuellen Aufgaben und Ressourcen der Polizei analysieren. Wie viel Geld hat die sächsische Polizei zur Verfügung? Was bliebe überhaupt noch an Aufgaben übrig, würde man die meiste “Kriminalität” als Ausdruck sozialer Probleme begreifen und an deren Ursache ansetzen würde, statt die Menschen mit Kontrolle und Bestrafung zu bekämpfen?
Danach wollen wir den Blick nach Rojava wenden, wo bereits eingebettet in eine soziale Revolution eine real existierende Alternative zum Umgang mit Gewalt und Konflikten entstanden ist. Dazu haben wir zwei Internationalistinnen vom Leipziger Rovaja Soli Bündnis Leipzig eingeladen. Welche Strategien wurden erprobt und welche Probleme bestehen dennoch? Was können wir aus den Erfahrungen auf unser konkretes Lebensumfeld übertragen?
Bereits hier und jetzt gibt es verschiedene solidarische Praxen, von denen wir lernen können. Larissa Nägler, Sozialpsychologin und Aktivistin bei der Initiative Schwarzer Menschen in Deutschland (ISD), beleuchtet mit uns die Gründe dafür, warum schwarze Menschen und People of Color – sei es aufgrund von Illegalisierung oder schlechter Erfahrungen mit der Polizei – diese nicht rufen können oder wollen und daher andere Umgangsstrategien zur Konfliktlösung entwickelt haben.

“Here and Now: Instead of Police, Solidarity “ - Introduction to Abolish The Police

The daily reports of right-wing extremist chat groups in the police, ammunition “gone missing”, police violence or deaths in police custody raise serious doubts about whether this institution can be reformed. This rings all the more true for the many people for whom the police are not a point of contact that guarantees “security”, but are the ones who violently control lives.

We at Copwatch Leipzig want to abolish the police as we know it, and replace the police with other mechanisms for ensuring “security” and “justice”. The call to “Abolish the police!” that emerged from the US-American Black Power movement is not a simple reform that can take place without necessary social changes. Capitalism and the nation-state, as the so-called “security and order” to be protected by the police, must therefore be overcome, just as we must develop solidarity-based mechanisms for dealing with violence and conflict in our communities. The abolishing approach is therefore embedded in a process of transformation of society as a whole, towards which we want to take the first steps together.
In our small series of events “Here and Now: Instead of Police, Solidarity “, we will be addressing the question of how we can begin to develop alternatives to the police right here in Leipzig.

The first panel on 23.04.21 will give an introduction to “Abolish The Police!”
We will begin by analyzing the current duties and resources of the police. What would be left if most “crime” were to be understood as a symptom caused by social problems which need to be addressed instead of fighting people with control and punishment?
Already here and now there are different solidary practices from which we can learn. Larissa Nägler, Social Psychologist and acitivist at „Initiative Schwarzer Menschen in Deutschland“ (Initiative of Black People in Germany), talks about the reason, why black and people of color -whether because of illegalization or bad experiences with the police – cannot or want to call them and have developed other strategies for dealing with conflicts.

To finish the first Panel off, we will turn our attention to Rojava, where, embedded in a social revolution, real existing alternatives for dealing with violence and conflict have emerged. We have invited two internationalists from the Leipzig Rovaja Solidarity Alliance to tell us about the strategies that have been explored and what problems still exist. What can we transfer from the experiences to our concrete living environment?
