Emma Louise Niblett, genannt Scout Niblett, ist eine englische Singer/Songwriterin, die in den USA (Portland/Oregon) lebt und zwischen 2001 und 2013 sechs Alben veröffentlicht hat. Nun kommt sie zum ersten Mal seit drei Jahren nach Deutschland, um alte aber auch ein paar neue Songs vorzustellen, die hoffentlich bald auf einem neuen Album erscheinen werden.

Scout Niblett tourt schon seit einigen Jahren um die Welt, gemeinsam mit Größen wie Cat Power, PJ Harvey oder Bonnie Prince Billy (mit dem sie im Duett wohl ihren bekanntesten Song "Kiss" aufgenommen hat) hat sie sich dabei einen immer größer werdenden Hörer-Kreis erspielt. Dabei macht sie nur das, was sie sich schon als 7-Jährige vorgenommen hat: Musikerin zu sein. Ihr markanter Klang ist geprägt von zurückhaltender Instrumentierung, die die Intensität ihrer Stimme erst so richtig ausstellt. Für zwei ihrer Alben hat Steve Albini, Produzent der Pixies und Nirvanas, verantwortlich gezeichnet.

Über ihr letztes Album "It's up to Emma" (von 2013) schriebe Andreas Borcholte auf Spiegel Online:
"It's up to Emma" ist ihr sechstes Album, es ist das beste seit ihrem Debüt "Sweet Heart Fever" von 2001. (...) Dunkel, reduziert, unterschwellig aggressiv, fiebrig nach Erlösung hungernd - ein so suggestives Break-up-Album wie "It's up to Emma" hat man lange nicht gehört, es hüllt einen ein in eine schwarze Wolke aus manischer Depression. Erschreckend: Man fühlt sich nicht mal unbehaglich darin.

mint mind is a new project from self proclaimed all around musical multi-tasker and electric wizard Rick McPhail. after investing the last few years in his proggy-melancholic project glacier (of maine) McPhail felt the need to go back and do something more primitive, less ambitious and actually fun again. sound-wise the idea was to do something fuzzy with a garage-y feel and attitude but to try to avoid the typical formulas used in garage music. unfortunately as we all know the garage genre is quite full of many retro fetishists that only listen to about a 3 year window of the history of rock n roll and McPhail listens to about a 30 year window. dogma-wise this meant to try stay away from many of the genre’s go to formulas such as the macho sonics, seeds , etc. sound alike type vocals incorporated in most of the style, the typical start/stop style riffs a la the kinks many bands use or even the often obligatory reverb overladen crappy sound. instead, much like many punk/indie bands of the late 70’s to late 80’s (such as early SST screaming trees, mudhoney, pixies, pavement, love and rockets, etc.) the beautiful simplicity, energy and rawness is used as a sound template but songwriting-wise a wider horizon of influences is allowed. so, when feeling hippie or trippy, be trippy. if feeling indie, let your inner indie out. through this openness in influences mint mind’s music becomes a mixture of sweet and sour fuzzy riffage underlined by a laid back slackerness that simultaneously gives nods to a mix of bands from the 60’s to present day. impossible as it sounds, mint mind is still able to mix and balance all these influences without them seeming forced together or contrived. blah blah blah blah, and so on, and so on…

mint mind’s debut »near mint« was written, produced and recorded by Richard Arthur McPhail (accompanied by Sven Janetzko on drums/vox and Frank Stöckling on guitar/vox) in the course of 3 months in McPhail’s upper room studio in Hamburg, Germany.

2010 in Esslingen bei Stuttgart als noisiges LoFi-Duo gegründet, veröffentlichen DIE NERVEN nach diversen Singles, EPs und Download-Alben, 2012 als Post-Punk/Noise-Rock Trio mit deutschsprachigen Texten und einem Hang zur Düsternis endlich Fluidum, ihr erstes physisches Album (This Charming Man Records). 2014 erscheint mit Fun der Nachfolger zu Fluidum und wird von Jan Wigger von Spiegel Online als "eine der wichtigsten und besten deutschsprachigen Platten dieses Jahrzehnts" bezeichnet. DIE NERVEN alias Julian Knoth (Gesang, Bass), Max Rieger (Gesang, Gitarre) und Kevin Kuhn (Schlagzeug seit 2012) sind „das vielleicht beste deutsche Trio seit Trio“ weiß der Wiener Standard. Sie spielten Festivals wie Roskilde (DK) und Eurosonic in Groningen (NL), eine Israel-Tour, und veröffentlichten als erste deutschsprachige Band auf Amphetamine Reptile Records (!!!). Wir freuen uns sehr (nein, wir freuen uns wie blöd!), DIE NERVEN herzlich bei Glitterhouse Records willkommen heißen zu dürfen. Das neue Album OUT wird im Oktober 2015 bei uns erscheinen und nicht nur Freunden von Mission Of Burma, Wipers, Bauhaus, Swans, Abwärts, Sonic Youth, Fehlfarben, Helmet oder Mudhoney gefallen.

OUT ist ein Meisterwerk. Schartig, laut, aufbegehrend. Hier wird Haltung ausgedrückt, Genervtheit, Frustration, Wut. Und Liebe? Ja, auch Liebe, irgendwie. Unbequem ist das, widerborstig, bitter, besonders. Bessere Lieder muss man erstmal schreiben.

Als ich vor ein paar Monaten im Plenumsprotokoll las, dass YOUNG FATHERS im Conne Island spielen werden, bin ich ernsthaft fast vom Stuhl gefallen.
Für alle, denen es nicht so wie mir ging, hier mal eine kurze Zusammenfassung:
Young Fathers sind drei Jungs, die sich im Alter von vierzehn Jahren bei einer HipHop-Veranstaltung in Edinburgh trafen. Seit 2008 machen Sie »offiziell» Musik unter dem Bandnamen Young Fathers, danach benannt weil sie alle die Namen ihrer Väter tragen.
Ins Zentrum der Aufmerksamkeit gelangte die Band, als sie 2014 den Mercury Prize, welcher jährlich das beste Album aus UK und Irland auszeichnet, für ihr Album Dead erhielt. Kein Wunder also, dass Dead meinen Nerv auch hart getroffen hat und ich mich so ziemlich beim ersten Hören in den schwer zu kategorisierenden Sound verliebte. Vor Dead haben sie bereits zwei Alben und mehrere Singles released.
Es ist wirklich schwer, Young Fathers in irgendeine musikalische Schublade zu stecken.
Einfach gesagt, Young Fathers passen überhaupt nicht in irgendein klassisches musikalisches Genre wie Alternative Rap, Indie Pop, Reggaeton, lo-fi R&B oder elektronische Musik (obwohl alles ein bisschen dran erinnert). Die Band selbst bezeichnet Pop als Freiheit. Was ja wohl stimmt, Pop ist irgendwie immer «alles» und Schubladen sind sowieso doof.
Ganz richtig liegt also Bandmember Hastings wenn er fordert, dass «ihre Songs im Radio neben die von Taylor Swift gehören». Taylor, Sam Smith, Rihanna und Co. reichen eben nicht aus, um die Leute mit Kultur zu versorgen. Hier muss ich anmerken, dass ich großer Taylor und Co. -Fan bin, aber die Gründe, warum Bands wie Young Fathers eben auch genau da hingehören, sind ja völlig offensichtlich.
Nur kurz nach dem Aufsehen um Dead legte die Band bereits ein weiteres Album vor: White Men Are Black Men Too. Der Mix ist noch derber und näher am Ohr als beim Vorgänger, Loops von Gitarrenfetzen rollen umher. Es wird mehr gesungen als gerappt, hinzu kommen subtile Chöre und mitreißende Claps. Wenn der Kopf erst einmal ins Nicken gekommen ist, kann und will er damit nicht mehr aufhören. Die Texte sind kurz gehalten: «Sirens» reflektiert den paramilitärischen Wahnsinn von Ferguson, «Nest» handelt von jungen Müttern, die ihre Kinder stillen. Ursprünglich hieß das Lied übrigens «Nestlé». Young Fathers hatten es auf Anfrage für eine Eistee-Werbung des Großkonzerns geschrieben. Allerdings unter ihren eigenen Bedingungen. Lange bevor das Schweizer Unternehmen nämlich den Kampf für die Privatisierung von Wasser begann, hat es in Entwicklungsländern aggressiv sein Milchpulver beworben – mit schwerwiegenden Folgen: In vielen Ländern Afrikas hat man Frauen eingetrichert, Milchpulver wäre besser als ihre Kinder mit Muttermilch zu ernähren, mit der Folge, dass bis heute viele Kinder und Jugendliche an Mangelernährung leiden. Es hätte sogar fast geklappt, der Konzern liebte das Lied. Aber natürlich ist es am Ende nicht zu einer Beendigung des Auftrags gekommen. Deshalb ist «Nest» nun auf White Men Are Black Men Too gelandet. An dieser Stelle komme ich nun doch nochmal auf den Titel des Albums zu sprechen. Die recht einfache Idee dahinter ist, dass die Line nicht untergehen und auf Plakaten stehen soll, damit Radiomoderatoren und auch alle anderen Menschen sie aussprechen müssen, wenn sie über das Album sprechen. In »Old Rock’n’Roll« heißt es:
I’m tired of playing the good black / I said I’m tired of playing the good black / I’m tired of having to hold back / I’m tired of wearing this hallmark for some evils that happened way back / I’m tired of blaming the white man / His indiscretion don’t betray him / A black man can play him / Some white men are black men too / Nigga to them / A gentleman to you
«Schwarz und Weiß sind die einfachsten Formen überhaupt. Sie schließen jeden mit ein», sagen Young Fathers. «Der Titel drückt die Gleichheit aller Menschen aus. Nur, sind wir gleich? Nein! Doch das Ergebnis unseres Schweißes, unseres Blutes und unserer Tränen ist es. Und die Welt sollte genau so sein. We’re one. Natürlich wird es Diskussionen geben. Aber wir haben die reinsten Absichten und werden alle Fragen beantworten.»
Also wer Young Fathers bisher noch nicht kennt, ändert dies bitte umgehend und kommt dann am Besten zum Konzert im Oktober. Es wird auf alle Fälle ein wahnsinnig guter Abend und wird uns allen ordentlich den Kopf verdrehen.
